Numbers 21:4-7 King James Version (KJV)
4 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.
5 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.
6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

The Bronze Serpent
4 Then they journeyed from Mount Hor by the Way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the soul of the people became very discouraged on the way. 5 And the people spoke against God and against Moses: “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our soul loathes this worthless bread.” 6 So the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many of the people of Israel died.
7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you; pray to the LORD that He take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.

4 They went around so that they didn’t have conflict with Edom, they were rejected from them passing thru Edom so for them to do this after being told know could have cause war but the people didn’t want to go the long way even though it avoided war sometimes the long way is worth the journey and the way God wants us to go on.
5 God had provided water every time they needed it and gave them manna everyday and yet they weren’t happy, they were about to gain the promised land but would miss out on that blessed because they kept blaming God and never enjoyed His blessings in life. Sometimes we miss the joy of God’s blessings because we see wilderness around us our surroundings can be hard but if we are following God then He is there with us and if we are not following God, He is waiting on us.
6 This time rather then being merciful God sent judgment for their complaints. We need to trust God and seek His will and follow Him and not blame Him for hardships of life.
7 They repented, God bringing judgment worked sometimes this works with people as well but sometimes they become stubborn and hard hearted.
