Acts 6:5-7 King James Version (KJV)
5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:
6 Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.
7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

Acts 6:5-7 New King James Version (NKJV)

5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, 6 whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them.
7 Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.

These are my thoughts, please share yours.

5 They chose to listen to the wise advice given to them; they could have done the unwise thing as many in the church do today and keep complaining.
Stephen was the first martyr killed for sharing the gospel.
Philip would later be called to share the gospel.
Tradition says that Prochorus would both go along with Peter or John and later become a leader within a church.
Nicanor would later die because of his faith.
Timon was a Jewish convert to Christianity and would become a church leader and later die for the faith.
Parmenas would die during the time of Christian persecutions.
Nicolas was a Greek convert to the Jewish faith would become a Christian. He would be one to start a movement that is addressed in Revelation. The accepted in fell into the sins of lust and taught that it was alright. Some say they may have misused his teachings to get credibility or used his name other traditions teach that the apostles talked to him for mistreating his wife who he would leave.

6 We need be careful who we choose because we do not want them be surrounded in controversy like Nicolas but it would more useful to us and God for them to be like men such as Stephen and Philip, so we just need to be careful. Them laying on hands and praying for them is how deacons or any church position is ordained in churches today, some may put oil on their heads and do more but there is a much need for laying on hands with prayer. Their position was not an easy one just as many positions that the Lord calls us to but they had the prayers of the church and God leading their way.

7 They apostles could focus on spreading the gospel now that this problem had been solved the church would just keep growing.
