Ezra 4:23-24 King James Version (KJV)
23 Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
24 Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
Ezra 4:23-24 Amplified Bible (AMP)
23 Then as soon as the copy of King Artaxerxes’ document was read before Rehum and Shimshai the scribe, and their colleagues, they went up hurriedly to Jerusalem to the Jews, and made them stop [work] by force of arms.
24 Then the work on the house of God in Jerusalem stopped. It was suspended until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

23 So the scribes read the letter their job would often be to take down the reply as a letter by listening and recording word for word. They used the authority they had because of this letter they would have allowed one person to keep working on the temple, they would have used all the power they had to prevent this. There are going to be people in this world who try to stop us from doing what the Lord wants us to do. Sometimes people are going to use force and power to stop us but we don’t serve them but should first listen to the Lord, the Lord may want us to use that time to do something else.
24 The work stopped, this have been a time for a uprising because they were not requiring their freedom just their temple, the Macabees would later revolt against Greece because of them disgracing the temple, they could have did something but just listen and stopped working.
